about
Any society that has a settled enough lifestyle to stay put long enough for drink to ferment has learned to enjoy it, and to feel its ill effects. In the heroic poetry of the Germanic peoples, mead, a brew made from fermented honey, is the drink of the halls of heroes. The praise for horns of mead may have marked its reputation as the drink pre excellence favored by any who could get his hands on it, but honey has never been a common commodity, and the drink in most men’s horns would be an ale. In one of our earliest descriptions of the drinking habits of the Germanic peoples, Tacitus describes the typical drink of the Germanic tribes in the first century CE as a drink distilled from barley and wheat. Tacitus also comments on the weakness of tribes for drink, stating “to out-drink the day and night is a reproach to no man: brawls are frequent; naturally, among heavy drinkers” and “if you humor their drunkenness by supplying as much as they crave, they will be vanquished by their vices as easily as on the battlefield.” While Tacitus’ comments may have been based in a somewhat biased view of the Germanic peoples, their own later writings are not without their own criticisms of the negative aspects of drink. Doubtless, many of the epic sagas describe flowing horns of mead and ale as the reward and bond of heroes, but other poets warn against drinking too much. In the Havamal, a collection of proverbs attributed to the High One (Odin, the God of Wisdom himself), there are several stanzas that warn against the vices of drunkenness, and advise moderation. What writings of the time that have passed down to us show a similarly complicated societal relationship with drink that still exists today. For many, then as now, drink is an important ritual for celebration and social bonding, but overconsumption has ill effects, and for some the dangers are greater than the benefits. When you raise a cup to drink to glory, whether it has a beer, a water or whatever, we’ll drink with you all the same. Wes hal, drinc hal!
lyrics
Across the frozen waves we sailed
Through frigid winds and on through daybreak
Land appeared and our spirits grew
Time grew short ‘til the dawn of battle
We shall win, we’ll make the gods proud
Or die in battle like true einherjar
Our numbers few, their armies vast
But in our hearts beats the blood of warriors
Axe in hand, clad in mail
We struck true, we struck hard
For our gods, for their lies
For brave deeds, take their lives
Now raise your horns and drink to glory!
We sent them running crying screaming
Tails tucked neat between their legs
Our shieldwall strong theirs manned by women
I can’t recall a better fight
So buy me a round and hear my story
Let’s celebrate battles old and new
Great victories and fallen brothers
Let’s toast them all if the drink’s on you
Axe in hand, clad in mail
We struck true, we struck hard
For our gods, for their lies
For brave deeds, take their lives
Now raise your horns and drink to glory!
Many years have gone since that victory
Many halls and men have heard my tale
Nothing have I done since that glorious day
It’s been long since I’ve cleaned blood from blade
Those who shared in the praise of our deeds
Gone to death or greater things
But here I sit telling all who’ll hear
Raising pints alone as I drink to glory
Axe in hand, clad in mail
We struck true, we struck hard
For our gods, for their lies
For brave deeds, take their lives
Now raise your horns and drink to glory!

Masterful use of acoustic passages and synth stuff. This is definitely my favorite black metal-dungeon synth kinda album I've found recently. Each track flows into the next so well, I cannot recommend it enough. Perri

The album as a whole is great, but the title track is phenomenal--one of the best melodic metal songs I've ever heard. 和美's ethereal voice is the perfect complement to vvildr's growling vocals and masterful instrumentation. More, please! Malcolm McCrimmon
