about

After Caesar’s conquest of Gaul, the Roman Republic (soon to be Empire) shared a border with the land the Romans called Germania. This was however not the first contact the Roman Republic had with Germanic tribes. During Caesar’s conquest of Gaul, he had fought and defeated Ariovistus, king of the Suebi, who had invaded Gaul from Germania under the same pretences of intervention that Caesar had. Even earlier, the Roman republic fought Germanic tribes in the Cimbrian war. The Cimbri had migrated from their home in modern Denmark, and along with allied tribes the Ambrones and Teutones, had invaded the Roman Republic in the late 2nd century BCE. They had several decisive victories, including the Battle of Arausio which was one of the greatest defeats in Roman history, the likes of which hadn’t been suffered since Hannibal. While the total defeat at Arausio was likely more due more to the ineptness of the Roman commanders than any virtue of the Germans, and the Romans did eventually defeat and annihilate the tribes a few years later, the defeats in the Cimbrian war did leave in the Roman psyche the image of the Germans as ferocious and terrifying warriors. This image was solidified by another catastrophic defeat at the hands of German tribes in 9CE in the battle of Teutoburg Forest. Three Roman legions were ambushed and totally annihilated by an alliance of Germanic tribes, led by Arminius, a member of the Cherusci tribe who had been raised in Rome, and used his position as a commander of Roman auxiliaries to lead the Roman army into the ambush. After this battle, the Romans made little attempts at subduing the Germanic tribes beyond the Rhine River, and it became the border of the Empire in that area until the fall of the Roman Empire. The song explores this Roman characterization of Germanic warriors from the Late Republic and Empire, and takes its name from a phrase first used by the Roman historian Lucan to describe them in his book Pharsalia. Also writing in the first century CE, Tacitus’s book Germania is one of the most comprehensive sources on Roman views of the Germanic tribes, and served as a source for the lyrics of the song. While it is fun to explore this characterization as we did in “Furor Teutonicus” it is important to remember that it is just that, a characterization. The image painted by late Roman authors is not a wholly accurate one, often used for moralizing purposes. Those who have used this image to promote theories of racial characteristics or superiority based on descent from Germanic tribes do so in an attempt to justify their already held views which are not grounded in reality.

lyrics

From beyond the Rhine they come
Wild men from wild lands
The Hercynian forest they call home
Hides a terror ‘neath its boughs

Furor Teutonicus
Terrors from beyond the Rhine
Furor Teutonicus
Hear their fearsome battle cry
Barritus

At Arausio they showed their strength
Cutting through the Roman ranks
At Teutoberg their cunning shown
Three eagles lost in Teutons’ woods

Furor Teutonicus
Terrors from beyond the Rhine
Furor Teutonicus
Hear their fearsome battle cry
Barritus

With bare chest and naked head
They plunge themselves into the fray
No fiercer foe have Romans faced
Than men with freedom in their breast

Furor Teutonicus
Terrors from beyond the Rhine
Furor Teutonicus
Hear their fearsome battle cry
Barritus
