about

The Battle of Mount Badon was one of the early battles between the celtic Britons and the Anglo-Saxons, believed to have occurred sometime around 500 CE. Very little is known about the battle, other than that it was a defeat for the invading Anglo-Saxons. It was first recorded by Gildas in his De Excidio et Conquestu Britanniae later in the 6th century CE, but with little detail. It is perhaps better known due to later writers including the battle in the mythology of King Arthur, originally with Nennius including it as the last of Arthur’s 12 great battles against the invading Anglo-Saxons in his Historia Brittonum. The lyrics of this song are presented from the viewpoints of the Anglo-Saxons marching to, and then running from this battle. Rather than revel in the glory of victory, this song takes a look at the guilt and shame a survivor of a lost battle may feel.

lyrics

Onward, to that hill we marched
Bright banners flew
Shimmering strands rolled in the wind
And songs rang from the dales
Up that hill we charged
Spears in hand
Brave bodies fell like golden wheat
And cowards ran

Shattered
We fled that cursed mountain
The wounded cried behind us
Abandoned, like the shields we cowards cast aside
But we have not forgotten
The brave who fell at Badon
Their names forever spoken
To the ring of grinding axes

Backwards, from that hill we fled
Britons on our heels
Arrows still sought our backs
And we deserved them all
Towards our halls we ran
Their welcome cold
Emptied of their men
Their songs now silent echoes

Shattered
We fled that cursed mountain
The wounded cried behind us
Abandoned, like the shields we cowards cast aside
But we have not forgotten
The brave who fell at Badon
Their names forever spoken
To the ring of grinding axes
